Podcasting

I’ve been having an interesting time playing around with pod-o-matic and blog elements. Pod-o-matic is certainly affordable and easy to use, although I feel rather exploited and exposed. Even though I’ve check all the “I do NOT want...” boxes, ‘wannabe new friends’ email me daily.

I was particularly interested in alternative methods of posting podcasts on the internet, especially when the author doesn’t have access to FTP or web editing software. I think my staff is really going to like this aspect.

I created my podcast in Garage Band, with music from freeplaymusic.com, and exported the audio file to iTunes. I uploaded the finished mp3 file to my pod-o-matic account and pasted the html code for the badge on my blog. Phew, this is a whole new language isn’t it?

I liked the menu of articles on podcasting-tools.com. and found many relevant resources. What is Podcasting gave a clear overview of the medium as well as ideas for possible applications. How Poscasting is Used dealt more with subscriptions and RSS feeds that uses. Audio Recording Tips gave great suggestions to prepare for a recording, which is never as easy as it sounds. Some people may be spontaneous speaker, but I’ve found most people freeze when you put a microphone in front of them. It pays to be prepared.

First Class Reflections

I thoroughly enjoyed our first class. The favorite part of my job is that technology is constantly changing. My biggest occupational challenge is that technology is constantly changing. Stimulating classes, such as Tech Trends II, help me make sense of new technological topics and share the best of those with my staff.

I waded through O'Reilly's article, What is Web 2.0, and although cumbersome the article clarified some fuzzy areas. These are some thought I took away with me. Web 2.O - It was helpful to to think of Web 2.O as a concept, the way in which the Internet is utilized rather than an object. Tags - The labeling shift from taxonomy to folksonomy is very interesting and more meaningful to the user. Data Ownership & Collaboration - At first glance "trusting users as co-developers" seems dangerous. I know some die hard "control freak" tech support guys who will have a hard time with this concept :-) I have to admit, I do worry about about security and wonder how all the personal Internet data will be managed, protected or sold. Lots to think about.
